Embracing the Road Ahead

As 2022 winds down, I’ve been reflecting on how this year has impacted our lives and the world around us. The past three years have undoubtedly challenged and changed businesses, governments, communities and industries. Looking to 2023, I know we’ll use the resiliency and adaptability we’ve developed to face everything a new year brings.

Our industry is undergoing the most dramatic transformation we’ve seen in generations. Here are three things I continue to remind myself and the General Motors team as we embrace the road ahead:

The heartbeat of an organization is its values and people.

Several years ago, we realized that electric, autonomous and connected vehicle technology would have a huge impact on our industry. At GM, we decided to lead this transformation rather than be disrupted by others.

Our people and their spirit of innovation move the company forward every day. We are committed to investing in our teams to bring everyone along on our journey to an all-electric future.

We’re doing this by uniting our teams around a shared purpose, vision, values and the behaviors that support them. This foundation is our north star, and it is inspiring positive outcomes that are helping us create a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion.

Challenges often offer an unexpected opportunity for growth.

When you face challenges, as we all do, I encourage you to find the unexpected opportunity. Lean into the discomfort and learn from it, because this is how we grow and learn the most about ourselves – personally and professionally.

At GM, I’ve seen challenges spur creativity and channel our ingenuity.

Hardship can be unpleasant in the moment, but it brings much-needed perspective and clarity to decision making. Instead of focusing on the reasons why things can’t be done, embrace a culture of “yes,” and to find ways to support each other and overcome challenges together.

We must ensure we don’t only respond to what’s right in front of us, but use our skills, energy and innovation to build the long-term future we want.

Every company needs to understand why it exists – and practice responsible, forward-thinking leadership. At GM, our purpose is to pioneer the innovations that move and connect people to what matters. When I talk with employees, they consistently tell me that they want to change the world. They want to be part of an inclusive culture that is transforming our industry and will leave a better planet for future generations.

As you plan for 2023, I encourage you to reflect on your purpose and how it can bring value to our communities around the world.

I began my career as an engineer, so I believe there's a solution to every challenge – we just have to find it. It starts with great teams who face them head-on, with a shared vision and clear sense of purpose. At GM, we’re embracing the road ahead, together.
